DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi regrets to announce the death of ARCHBISHOP REMI JOSEPH GUSTAVE SAINTE-MARIE, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe. Archbishop Ste-Marie has passed on today in Canada, his home country where he was receiving medical treatment.

The Most Reverend Sainte-Marie, a Member of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) was born on 11th January 1938. He was ordained priest on 29th June 1963. He was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Dedza on 7th September 2000. On 18th February 2006, he was appointed coadjutor Bishop of Lilongwe. On 4th July 2007, he was appointed Bishop of Lilongwe. He was appointed Archbishop of Lilongwe on 9th February 2011 when the Diocese was raised to the status of an Archdiocese. Since then, he served as Metropolitan Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe until the time of his retirement on 13th July 2013.
