In response to the calls by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi to all dioceses to show their disapproval of same-sex marriages, the Diocese of Dedza held peaceful demonstrations on Monday, 17th July 2023. The event which was graced by a multitude of people, was a result of concerted efforts from the Diocese of Dedza and groupings from other Churches like the Pastor’s Fraternal, Evangelical Association of Malawi but also the Muslim Association of Malawi. People walked from M1 Junction to the District Commissioner’s Office where a petition of grievances was presented.
The peaceful demonstrations were led by Rt. Rev. Peter Chifukwa, the Bishop o the Diocese of Dedza, Monsignor John Chithonje, Fr. Joseph Biliati, the Pastoral Secretary of the Diocese, numerous priests and sisters, pastors, sheikhs, other religious leaders, the lay faithful and many people of Goodwill. This was a clear manifestation and commitment of the Church to safeguard the sanctity of marriage.
