Appointment of Rt Rev George Desmond Tambala as Archbishop of Lilongwe

His Excellency, Archbishop Gianfranco Gallone, Apostolic Nuncio to Malawi and Zambia is pleased to announce that His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Right Reverend George Desmond Tambala as Archbishop of Lilongwe.

This announcement has been made today, Friday 15th October 2021 at noontime at the Vatican City.

The Archdiocese of Lilongwe has been vacant since 14 December 2020 following the passing on of Archbishop Tarcisius Gervazio Ziyaye.

In a statement signed by the Secretary-General of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), Fr Henry Saindi, Rt Rev Tambala will remain at the helm of Zomba Diocese as Apostolic Administer until he takes canonical possession of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe.

The ECM Secretary-General added, “We have every reason to rejoice and congratulate the Archbishop-elect as through is appointment we witness yet another indication of divine providence and the pastoral care of Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd.”

Rt Rev Tambala is a member of the Religious Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCD).  He made his first religious profession in 1991 and was ordained a priest in 1996.
